The Problem of Killing Black Bears

Black bears will intimidate pumas off a kill so they can take it for themselves. When this is happening, pumas spend less time feeding on a kill. A study published last year by Alan et al. found that in response to this aggressive kleptoparasitism,. pumas shorten the time between kills by 1.3 days. It means they're hunting more frequently and increasing their kill rates. So in this case, we're seeing klepto-parasites actually impacting the top down control of an ecosystem.
