Socrates' Discourse on Justice
The main discourse of the Republic begins when one of the men that Socrates is discoursing with, Pauli Marcus. For someone to possess the quality of justice, how does that differentiate him from the unjust person? To answer these questions and to answer attacks from one of the other interlocutors, Thrasymachus, Socrates says he must bring the argument to a larger scale. The ideal city that Socrates conjures is simply a pedagogical tool for talking about virtue.
