The History of Ancient Greece

The Battle of Owenoy
Peloponnesian allies began to grow unhappy with Archidamus before the war started. They accused him of weakness because he loitered at the Ismus and they marched much lower than normal. Pericles laid out his defensive strategy that we discussed last episode, to the people in the Echosia. In doing so, he backed up why this strategy would work by listing the city's vast financial and military resources. The Athenians listened to Pericles' advice, and it's a measure of his influence and eloquence that he was able to persuade his fellow Athenians to do something conspicuously at odds with the traditional Greek warrior ethos.
