Pretence is about contingent singulars and human beings having finite powers of reas. As thomas says, that sometimes things have to be done which are not covered by common rules of action. We also suffer from a kind of a, well, from various degrees of ignorance. Sometimes through through no fault of our own, we are unaware of those universal judgments by which we ought to determine what to do in particular circumstances. I mean, you don't have a time machine, so you can't go backwards and know everything that you needed to learn and know in order to choose the right course.
