The centre of the novel is not wild bill hickock, but his friend charliey utter. He's trying to make his way in this new world, on the frontier, as it was then. There are many perspectives in this book, but his is really central. And he's a very moving character. Even though deadwood is sort of a settlement and not a city,. it's al deadwood, and you're really in the place. Shend: "This is an urban western"
