Introduction

Hobbs is a play by thomas hobbs, written in the seventeenth century. In it he criticises aristotle's idea that humans are political animals. He compares them to bees and ants who naturally produce harmonious communities. Hobbs says we can't rely on nature for any kind of unity amongst humans. We need artifice such as hierarchy or power over our natural inclinations. And this explains why government must be able to suppress people with sedition.
