Philosophy: The Love of Wisdom | A Guide to Life

CHAPTER

The Dialectical Exercise of Socrates

Socrates never wrote anything and questioned everything ordinary people took for granted or left unquestioned. The Oracle of Delphi stated that Socrates was the wisest person in Athens, but he believed he was wiser than others because he recognized his own ignorance. Unlike the sophists who would trade wisdom for money and speak for their own benefit, Socrates would never accept money and would speak to the benefit of the interlaugutor. He taught people to listen to their conscience. If one doesn't know what to say, one should keep asking questions to oneself and others until one finds out. And answers worth nothing unless it comes from one's own thinking.
