How to Create a Culture Shockwave in the Reader
I want to create a sense as if the reader has got on the wrong airplane and gets off in an airport that they're not expecting. I use words that have some relationship to real language, which are like twisted enough that you kind of half recognize them. That's the attempt to create a sort of culture shock that brings you in but pushes you away at the same time. It would be almost kind of too plodding to actually just explain to the reader what's going on.
