Kranz forced flight controllers to stop, reset their approach and start again afresh. It's now a struggle to keep enough power flowing through the command module systems. Using the batteries is a holding measure, but for now it's nearly all they can think to do. Upboard the spacecraft, the astronauts are calling down. Hungry for solutions. But mission control still haven't got a clear sense of what's happened. What they need is someone who can give them a handle on the big picture. And John Krantz was that person.
