The Maginot Line in France

After the First World War, French planning shifted to one of preparations for a long conflict. The Commission on the Defense of the Frontiers would spend an entire year working on its final report. Various forms of defense were suggested and studied, from fixed defenses to far more mobile defenses. In the end it would be the fixed defensive fortification system that would be seen as the only way of providing France with territorial integrity.
