The History of Slavery in the United States
Slavery was the underlying, defining issue that drove a wedge between the colonies and britain. To see the revolution as an effort by colonial slaveholders to defend their slaveholding interests against being undermined by the british makes most sense in virginia. Some states, particularly rhode island, still held out and rejected the constitution,. even with the bill of rights, and had to be forced into ratifying.
