The Gulag archipelago is a surreal sort of hell where you imprison yourself. Solzhenitsyn's book is much broader and I would say deeper. The thing that affected me most particularly was the psychological take on the totalitarian states. It's easy to cast yourself as a victim but not as a perpetrator, which I think it really important to do.
