The catholic church operated roughly 60 % of these residential schools. The number varies depending on the sources that you look at, because it's not an easy number to count. In two thousand and six this enormous, complex legal agreement called the indian residential school settlement reement was put together. It was a multi party legal settlement between the federal government, several denominations, including the catholic church, and indigenous groups. This settlement set aside billions of dollars in restitution for survivors of residential schools.
