Economists tend to think that managing inflation is a job best done by central bankers. If the government wanted to directly try and bring inflation down, it could be cutting its own spending or putting taxes up - neither of which would be very popular measures with many people. Although they might help bringing inflation down, they would obviously make economic growth that much harder.
