A carrot to a person in the 15th century was the sweetest thing that ever tasted. In World War II, carrots became quite important in England during blackouts. The government put out adverts saying eat as many carrots as possible because it'll make your eyes fantastic and you'll be able to see in the dark during blackout. But they were just for morale but it's from this we see the resurgence of the carrot cake due to rationing sugar.
