Are the Nicknames Given to the Carolingian Thrones Ironic?
Many of these nicknames aren't actually from the carolingin period itself, but they were only later applied to many of these rulers that we're talking about. The earliest written evidence for charles the bald i is from the tenth century, it may already have been in use during his lifetime. There are also theories that perhaps et could have been implied in a metaphorical sense or even as an emasculating term. But there's really no strong evidence that supports or discredits any of these theories particular.
