The Purpose of the EU

Every country carries a folk memory and these countries, I think, all had something to atone for. The EU was a way of helping them to atone. But this is what they've got into their heads because of their difficult history. It's NATO that's saved the peace for 75 years and not the EU. Britain would have felt constrained in terms of its very substantial and immediate help to Ukraine had it still been in the EU.
