The Colored Man Is as Anxious to Have Social and Political Equality as the White Man Is Not
So-called social equality was the specter most often conjured up by white supremacists. Black leaders, including legislators, were quick to mock this argument. In Alabama, black delegates trolled their opponents with a proposal to punish any white man found marrying or cohabitating with a black woman for lifetime imprisonment.
