The Wise Woman in a Children's Book
There's a kind of a complex family structure here. When I was reading it through, I had to keep going back and rereading things to figure out who was who. So you have to wrap your head around a lot of characters in a children's book. Quite often children's books stick doggedly to one character because they assume that the audience is not going to be able to follow that many. It also allows the child, Kerry, to grow up quickly because she's now looking after her younger brother. That's another sort of end with that loss of innocence,. Another element of that suddenly she is not the one who's been looked after. She has to look after someone else.
