I think the answer is laziness. I never worked in a place where they had fully transitioned to these kind of table side credit card processing equipment. It goes to show you how much things have changed in the last three or four years. The total amount isn't significant enough that if it's a couple of dollars off, I'm going to really cause a scene anyhow.
