The Paradox of Democracy
There is a tension that people really look back on as a golden age periods in American life when things were a lot less small d democratic. There are ways to change the world quote unquote to fight for change that protect the system atop which you stand and there are ways to do that that threaten the system, says Julian Zelizer. The rich and powerful don't act in a vacuum i think they act with a kind of passive cultural ascent according to Zelizer. He also thinks philanthropy can shift from giving back to giving up and crowding out government into more democracy.
