The Importance of Listening to Your Environment

In linguistics, we call this, I'm going to give you a fancy linguistic lingo, lingo term here that a speaker's linguistic repertoire. We don't live in the same context and the same situations and with the same conversational partners every day, all the same, all the time. So it's natural for us to shift in those contexts. And if we didn't shift, we'd make people feel awkward and sort of like they should be what they're not.
