CHAPTER

The Extended Church Turing Thesis Is Wrong

The original church Turing thesis which dates back to the 1930s was that a certain mathematical model could capture any computation which could be carried out in nature by any physical process. The modern version that has replaced it is the thesis that anything that can be solved efficiently in nature with any conceivable computing machine can be simulated efficiently by a quantum computer. And we don't know for sure whether that's correct it's a statement about physics and not just a mathematical statement, but there is evidence indicating that it is correct.
