When earth was first forming, it was sort of a solar system dance. You had all these bodies that were gravitationally greedy. And so in this game, the largest body always wins. Whatever has the most mass wins. For ew tens of millions of years, earth was competing with another smaller body and they collided. Part of what's over becomes the moon, and part of what's left over becomes part of earth. That clump of stuff that is blasted off the surface during the collision consolidates into the moon.
