It was against Spanish law for anyone, but a Spaniard to ride a horse. So the most trusted of the Indians because they were their slaves, who they conquered, started to teach them the ways of the Spaniard,. The half breed bit got its name from that. But I always found it ironic that technically in North America, the first cowboy was an Indian and shoots the crap out of the little cowboys and Indians thing we grew up around.
