De Cartes's Discourse on Methodology

In 16 37, he published his discourse on method one of the first major philosophical works in the european western philosophical canon. This is significant because de cartes argued that the light of reason provided everyone with the ability to tell true from false. Meditations sparked several responses. The jansenist philosopher and theologian antoine arnaud, the english philosopher thomas hobbs, and the epicurean pierre gasendi all gave their critiques. Descartes calls it a methodological doubt, or methodology of doubt. It is at this point we may consider the text in light of descartes's beliefs and experiences up to that point in his life.
