In the 1990s, people developed trapped ion technology where we trapped charged atoms with electromagnetic fields to make better clocks. What they had learned to do was to manipulate individual atoms with lasers. And that's sort of the fundamental operation in a quantum computer. It enables you to entangle two atoms.
