The Taiwanese Leadership's Options
The nightmare scenario for geopolitical analysts like me is what if Taiwan tries to declare independence. The Taiwanese government doesn't want to placate China in that sense and they haven't really done anything wrong. They need the goodwill of the United States because the only real deterrence they have against China waltzing in and taking the island back. For this to deescalate, it's not about what happens in Taipei but how these two sides dealing with each other in Taiwan is kind of crushed in between.
