#4 The Tasty Rock that Changed the World (Salt: A World History)

Nat's Notes

CHAPTER

Venice's Control of the Salt Trade

In 1250 when Venice agreed to supply Montoya and Ferrara with salt, the contract stipulated that these cities would not buy salt from anyone else. And this became the model for Venice salt contracts. So then Venice realizes that it needs to control more of the salt trade. In the late 13th century, wishing to raise the world market price, Venice had all salt works in Crete destroyed and banned the local production of salt. They've been able to take over this area by controlling the flow of salt. It basically continues until the Mediterranean stops being the dominant body of water in world trade.
