The Gods of the Copy Book Headings
Rudyard Kipling wrote a poem called The Gods of the Copy Book Headings after World War I. In those days, a century back, it was very common and normal that in order to learn and practice handwriting, you would be given a copy book. And at the top of the copy book would be a pithy aphorism or proverb or some other maxim or verse. For example, stick to the devil you know, the wages of sin is death and if you don't work you die. But these gods of the copybook headings were part of the common culture.
