Taiwan is an island off the southeastern coast of China, about 100 miles away. Only around a dozen countries in the world recognize Taiwan as a sovereign, independent country. To the People's Republic of China, Taiwan is essentially a renegade province that must be restored to the PRC by force if necessary.
