The Golden Bow was subtitled A Study in Magic and Religion. The subtitle made a claim which has had immense influence ever since. Fraser's own normative beliefs defined what was legitimate ritual practice. In modern times, we're not so much concerned with the evil of magic because we tend not to believe that magic actually works. We're against it because of its supposed irrationality or primitiveness.
