What Does Death Mean?
i would argue, i did at the e t s conference on the east coast last year, that in context, it's a physical death that paul has in mind. The argument that i'm making here is that when we talk about jesus death, there's no question what we're talking about. That punishment of the prive ion of bodily life, the lossan the privation, deprivation of life, that is the very punishment that we think would have awaited the elect and will await the lost. But the traditional view, the doctrine of eternal torment, says their punishment is not death. Their punishment is everlasting life in immortal torment.
