The number of people in St. Pierre-Martemique on May 8, 1902 was around 28,000. Why there were more than usual is something we can answer. The best place to begin is with that scientific commission Monsignor Parell teased at Sunday Service. It was called by Louis Mutet, the appointed governor of Martinique. Muteit had only been on the job in Martinique for 10 months, but he'd been working for decades to get there. He worked as a newspaper editor and secretary of the Paris Historical Society before joining the French Colonial Service.
