The Tower of London
William I is crowned at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. The Norman conquerors are nervous during the service, aware of how outnumbered they are in this city. As William's pronounced king, a great shout fills the Abbey, startling the Norman soldiers posted outside who are unused to the English rites. Chaos breaks out, followed by fighting and looting, and the congregation flees. And now, regarded with even more suspicion than when they arrived, the new king and his supporters withdraw to barking a few miles east until suitable fortifications can be built. From a safe distance, William approves the plans, and construction begins.
