Why Do Many Players Take a Deep Return Position on Clay?
The reason for this is twofold one. If you stand closer, you are not taking advantage of the slower bounce as much. There's less distance from the bounce to when you get to hit the ball. And a third thing, if you hit a great return on clay, an early return more likely to be neutralized. So what you're doing by standing in, you're decreasing your defence, your defensive returning. You're covering less of the box, and you're not rewarded for taking your return early. On clay, it's really difficult to rush. Your offence isn't potent, your defence isn't as good, and you aren't in position to defend on the next ball
