How Much of That Is Going on Under the Hood?
When you're doing something that doesn't require memory, maybe the hippocampus just shuts off. But everything is always going on under the hood as well. It's very hard for us to estimate how much is happening because by its nature, we're not aware of it. In laboratory settings, you can try to see cases where people have implicit memories that affect their behavior even without their awareness.
