Sophists were not dispassionate seekers of truth, but advocates and wordsmiths. The best example of the sophist as an all around wise man was hippias. At their most radical, they could occasionally be moved to suggest that there is no absolute truth to be found,. This idea is associated cially with the greatest of the Sophists, protagoras.
