The Future of Battery Technology
The International Space Station has replaced nickel hydrogen batteries with lithium ion. The new battery technology is more efficient, but it's past its use case on the ISS and can't be mass-produced at mass scale. If you're doing a deep space mission, you want a battery that's going to last you 30 years. You don't have to worry about overcharging like a lithium ion battery.
