Episode 53 - Misunderstood Seismic Principles

The Structural Engineering Podcast

CHAPTER

Typical Linear, Elastic Reliability

In sismic design, we assume that our building 's going to behave elastically. And rather than designing for our full force of an earthquake, we're going to divide that force by a factor of r. We take the force we are expecting that our building would see under an earthquake, and wed divide it by a pretty big number. That absorption of energy is limiting how force can actually make its way into our building. But in your mid size mc ranges, yo, you do get to play around with that cost be analysis.
