Descartes is operating from definitions that are untenable. His understanding of the mind is completely fictitious and divorced from reality. We don't know if a disembodied mind, such as descartes describes is even possible. The only examples of minds we have ever encountered exist as result of physical brains bound up with a particular physiology.
