The Importance of Punishment in Australia

In Roman law, there were two forms of capital punishment. Death and exile are both capital punishments. Edelman seems to be saying in his judgment that we do anything of capital punishment execution as taking of your life. But the Romans thought about it differently. There are two ways we could get rid of you killing you or throwing you out. It's a reminder to keep our minds open as to the range of things that could be capable of being called punishment.
