The South Sea Company and the South Sea Bubble

Lord argues that the 1721 Hellfire Panic was tied to a larger moral panic going on at that time associated with something called the South Sea Bubble. This was the collapse of a joint stock company which had promised investors huge returns based on growing trade with Spanish America. Lord: Once the existence of the clubs became common knowledge, journalistic hacks quickly embellished what happened at its meetings so that fact and fiction became merged.
