CHAPTER

Mollar's Symphony on the Beethoven v Motive

The section of the Beethoven V motive keeps intruding, reminding us of its ever-present anxiety. The theme, marked to be played very singing, is in an almost impossibly long phrase. As the theme grows in intensity it feels almost inevitable that we have to return back to the desperate music at the beginning of the movement. And we do, but this time Mollar adds horns to those slashing chords. He has raised the intensity one notch as he will continue to do throughout this movement, trying to find some way to avoid another collapse.
