The History of the Dean of American Anthropology
In 1911, American Indians weren't legally US citizens. They retreated like wards of the state. Alfred Crober asked what later became known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs for permission to take the man into custody. The anthropologist needed a name to call the man by, but the man wouldn't share his name with people he just met. That meant man Ishi.
