The History of the Goths
The goths first enter the historical record in connection with a time of massive upheaval in the Roman world. They raided Hystria at the mouth of the Danube along the Black Sea, and then withdrew when they were paid off. We don't hear much about them for the next 50 years or so, but by the 320s the lower Danube was known as the Ripa Gothica,. The land beyond the Danube had started to be called 'Gothia', which is what Greek speakers called it.
