Shafer Jonathan Shafer's program was called Chinook which is named after a wind that blows through Canada. As his program Chinook got better and better at checkers, Shafer wanted to test it against the best human in the world because what computer scientists wouldn't. And he learned of a man named Marion Tinsley who is the best was the best checkers player in the world. Over a 40 year stretch of play comprising some 1,000 tournament games Tinsley lost exactly three times. What ensues I won't spoil too much of chapter one but what ensues is really triumphant and heartbreaking and devastating and heroic sort of friendly battle between the two.
