Pan Am attempted to save themselves, but it was hemorrhaging money by the millions. Fortune Magazine even named this one of the top seven worst mergers of 1970. Pan Am wanted so badly to beat out Texas International, a different airline that had been interested in purchasing national. It seems like Pan Am was so desperate to have a domestic route that they settled.
