In 1896, William James gave one of the most important lectures in the history of the philosophy of religion. He wanted to show that there are times when it is rational to believe without sufficient evidence. His views were challenged by prominent British atheist William Clifford who argued against the leap of faith. But James countered that there are responsible and irresponsible leaps of faith. And he offered three criteria to distinguish between the two.
