In 1837, a pro-slavery mob murdered Elijah Lovejoy, the abolitionist editor of what was effectively an anti-slavers zine. John Brown's wife and children all prayed with him and swore an oath to fight for slavery's defeat. All seven of his unregenerate boys who survived childhood would take up arms against slavery.
